Rached Ghannouchi takes legal action against Sky News Arabia

Rached Ghannouchi, the leader of the largest Tunisian political party Ennahdha, is taking legal action against Sky News Arabia in relation to a news report broadcast on 9 June 2017.
The purported background to the news report was the ongoing investigation into the 2013 assassination of Tunisian trade union leader Chokri Belaid.

The news report clearly claimed – falsely – that Mr. Ghannouchi was actively and knowingly involved in the operations leading to the assassination of Mr Belaid.
Mr. Ghannouchi is shocked by these allegations, which are utterly untrue and highly defamatory. There is absolutely no basis for suggesting that Mr. Ghannouchi in any way facilitated this murder or that he was in any way associated with the terrorist group that is reported by Sky News Arabia to have committed the murder. Further, Mr. Ghannouchi was not asked for comment or given any opportunity of rebuttal by Sky News Arabia before these appalling allegations were broadcast.
Faced with these false and deeply distressing allegations, Mr. Ghannouchi is forced to take legal action against Sky News Arabia.

Mr. Ghannouchi regrets being forced to do so but has no alternative other than to ensure that the record is set straight.
